How to get rid of that dreaded double chin using Kybella

You eat healthy, you exercise, and you take care of your body. For some reason, you can’t seem to get rid of that double chin. Kybella might be the answer to your woes.

Many people who find it easy to tone their body and lose fat in their arms, legs, and abdominal area still can’t seem to get rid of that pesky turkey wattle. In fact, according to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), 67% of people with a double chin were bothered by fullness under the chin.

What is Kybella and how does it work?

This is from Allergan (the same company that makes Botox and Juvéderm dermal fillers), the makers of Kybella:

The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.

When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

You and your provider will decide how many treatments you need. Once the desired aesthetic response is achieved with Kybella, re-treatment is not expected.

Essentially, Kybella is made of this stuff, deoxycholic acid, that your body already makes. This deoxycholic acid is synthetic, but it works the same way—it breaks down and helps your body absorb those pesky fat cells FOR GOOD! That means, once you’re done with treatment, that’s it!

What’s the difference between Kybella treatments and liposuction?

Liposuction is surgery. While it’s a one time shot, you’ll still likely have to go under general anesthesia, face the risk of infection, and you’ll likely have a longer recovery with more downtime…and you might have to wear one of these

tumblr_n8rfruhO6L1tv4k5po1_400Kybella will likely take a few treatments (most people average 3, but anywhere from 2-6 treatments can be necessary), but the results are worth it! And while you’ll experience some swelling (okay, a lot of swelling) and maybe some injection site bruising, you won’t be down for the count like you will be with surgery. You can potentially leave the office and head right back to work…if you’re cool walking around with a pretty swollen chin. But hey, a swollen chin for a week, no recovery from surgery or facing potential risks with general anesthesia, and you don’t have to wear that ridiculous compression contraption!

What you can expect:

  • 2-6 treatments, but most people average 3-4
  • Treatments every 4-6 weeks
  • A lot of swelling initially
  • A little soreness, but little to no “recovery” time

How is the procedure done?

Your Skinjectables Injectionista will give you a cold compress to hold under your chin for several minutes to help numb the area a little and lessen the pain from the pinch of a very tiny needle. The Kybella will be injected into several areas (usually 15-40 little injections) under the chin and along the upper neck depending on the anatomy of your chin, how much fat you have, and how it is dispersed. You’ll swell up pretty fast and it may feel heavy and strange when you swallow—don’t worry, you’re okay and that’s normal! After all the injections are complete, you will place the cold compress back on your chin to relieve any residual pain and then be on with your day!
