The Perfect Pout: A Guide to Lip Fillers

Yesterday, we talked about all injectables and took a broad look at where dermal fillers fit in with your anti-aging regimen. Today, we want to get into the specifics of each treatment area and how dermal fillers can help.

Let’s start with that pout!

It’s fairly well known that dermal fillers are used in the lips, but we want to talk a little more about how they are used and what concerns they can address:

  • Naturally thin lips
  • Thinning lips due to aging
  • Smokers/pursing lines
  • Giving lips a smoother appearance

For naturally thin lips or thinning lips due to aging, a patient can discuss with our injectors what kind of results they are looking for and what shape they are looking to achieve. We aren’t miracle workers here, but we’re pretty close! There are a lot of different looks that are individual preferences so we’re here to work with you. Maybe you want a Kylie Jenner pout…

Or maybe you’re looking for something a little more natural…

Juvederm Lip B+A 1

Either way, we’re here to help puff up that pout! We like Juvederm and Restylane, but Volbella, a new, lip specific filler will be available later this year and it is expected to last up to a full year! You can read more about Volbella here.

What about those pesky lines around or on your lips often caused by smoking or pursing, but can also be due to loss of volume as we age? We can help with those, too! The deeper the lines the harder it will be to eliminate them completely, but most patients see a vast improvement and are thrilled with the results for this procedure. Your lips will look smother, softer, and more kissable than ever before!

The lips are only one part of a perfect pout, though. The lines that come down from our nose to our mouths—some people refer to them as parentheses or laugh lines—called the nasal labial fold can get deep with age and unless they are very deep, they can easily fill these with Restylane or Juvederm. Both products last between 4 and 6 months.

Marionette’s lines can also be a concern. These are the lines that go from our mouths to our chin that make our skin look a little saggy and a little like puppets! Again, as long as the lines aren’t too deep, Juvederm and Restylane are also both great options for this area and can help perk up your pout in no time!

Nasal labial folds and Marionette’s lines can also be treated using Sculptra, a collagen stimulator first introduced as a treatment to restore volume to the gaunt faces of HIV patients. Now, the cosmetic market has found some great uses for it in anti-aging including helping out those areas around the mouth. Sculptra, though more expensive, can last up to two years. It is a collagen booster so the results aren’t as instant as with the hyaluronic acid based fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, but the results will last longer. Sculptra will also need to be done in 2-3 treatments 4-6 weeks apart and then once a year maintenance after that. However, if you’ve never had filler in these areas before and aren’t sure about how you’ll feel about the results, we recommend trying Juvederm or Restylane first to make sure you like the effect.
